Once a student reaches the age of 5 they can choose to compete in dance festivals. Most students begin on our competition team, the ‘Elite Team’, and then after getting a feel for competitions may choose to compete in solos and duos also. When a student chooses to compete, they must attend an additional festival class each week to work on routines for the festivals. This will usually increase to 2 classes a week (3 or 4 for solos and duos) as the year goes on. At a festival students will compete in separate age categories and dance styles. All students receive medals and/or certificates, some even get trophies, big cups or shields and even bursaries to help pay towards thier dance training. The festivals have a very friendly and supportive atmosphere with other dancers and teachers cheering each other along and supporting one another. The judges are always friendly and fair and give each child encouragement and praise, as well as tips to help them improve next time around. We normally enter festivals in Northern Ireland and South England. Entry costs are around €2.50-4 per section entered. The team enters 4 or 5, solos and duos enter an additional 1-8 sections. Competing in festivals is a great experience for any students, giving them a chance to travel, make new friends, be part of a team and win prizes. We have had great success in competition so far and our students have loved taking part. Anyone is welcome to sign up, as long as they are willing to commit to what is involved. Competitive students must attend class regularly, practice and stretch at home and take part in all competition for that year (approximately 3). Financial commitments for parents include travel, accommodation and costumes. To sign up for the competition program, please inform Leighton. Details and information for competitions will be added to this page when any are coming up.
